Vertebrate muscles It is among the vertebrates that the most exhaustive studies of fibre diversity have been carried out. The successive levels of investigation, from the biochemical, through the electrophysiological to the mechanical, show just h o w fundamental are the differences between fibres. Amphibian skeletal muscle has been examined at all of these levels and The Fine Structure of Skeletal Muscle 43 forms an excellent introduction to muscle fibre heterogeneity. The early work of Tasaki and Mizutani (1944), Kuffler and Gerard (1947), Kuffler and Vaughan-Williams (1953), Burke and Ginsborg (1956) and Orkand (1963) showed the presence of two distinctive types of fibre in frog skeletal muscle, fast and slow.

Such an extensive system of internal tubules acts to greatly increase the muscle fibre surface area, and Falk and Fatt (1964) have suggested that much of the fibre membrane capacitance may be located in the walls of the T system.
