25 Agnes no doubt continued to study astronomy during those six years in Dublin, helped by her brother, now a student at Trinity College. Aubrey at university The Clerke family’s move to Dublin coincided with Aubrey’s first year at Trinity College Dublin, where he became a scholar in mathematics and natural sciences. He had a brilliant academic career, gaining a string of awards and prizes. He graduated with a BA in 1865 with first Aubrey at university class honours and gold medals in both mathematics and experimental science, and was awarded a seven-year postgraduate studentship in science.

The last book in the gift set was a beautifully illustrated Treatise on the use of the Microscope by John Quekett, a professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. The leather-bound books, still perfectly preserved, are giltlettered and decorated. The outside cover of each volume is inscribed: ‘A Memorial of regard and esteem from the Inhabitants of Skibbereen and its neighbourhood. August 1861’. They were the farewell gift to John Clerke, presented at a public gathering when he left the bank for a new career in Dublin.

These contributions to the Encyclopaedia – which bore her signature – brought Agnes Clerke to public notice for the first time. Reviewers hailed her as the new Mary Somerville, the reference being to the Scottish woman mathematician celebrated for her treatises on mathematics and the physical sciences half a century earlier.
