We have characterized the main lines of argument around three positions—those of the globalists, the traditionalists and the transformationalists. The globalists are convinced that globalization is taking place and dramatically changing the social and economic context.

Examples might include the linkages among Chinese communities outside China (Allen, 1999, pp. 212–4) or the complex linkages among black people through what Gilroy (1993) calls the ‘black Atlantic’.
